About LAYERTEC

LAYERTEC was founded in 1990 as a spin-off of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. We produce optics of the highest quality for laser applications in a wavelength range from VUV (130 nm) to NIR (~7 μm). Since the early 1990s, our products have been used worldwide in industry, universities, and research institutions. Many important developments in laser technology in recent years have been supported by LAYERTEC products.

Our company combines high-precision optics manufacturing with a variety of advanced coating systems (magnetron and ion beam sputtering, thermal evaporation, ion-assisted electron beam evaporation). This unique combination allows us to control and ensure the quality of the optical components throughout the entire production process, from grinding, polishing, and cleaning, to the final coating.

Currently, LAYERTEC employs more than 400 people in precision optics manufacturing and operates 40 state-of-the-art coating systems. The variety of coating technologies allows us to cover the entire wavelength range from VUV to NIR with sputtered and evaporated coatings, fluorides and oxides, dielectrics and metals. The different capacities of these machines enable us to produce both series products for large customers and smaller quantities for research institutions and prototypes for research and development at attractive prices.

History

LAYERTEC (optische Beschichtungen) GmbH is the first spin-off from the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena after the po- litical changes in East Germany. The founder of the company, Hartmut Heyer, studied physics in Jena between 1976 and 1981. Until 1989 he worked as a scientific assistant on the technology of sputtering for the production of oxide coatings for optical applications. The basis for these developments were the novel PPS5 magnetron sputter sources of the Manfred von Ardenne Institute in Dresden.
